Interactive Pointe Shoe Display

While working at The Dance Store in Los Angeles I was approached by the Audience Engagement Manager at the Dorothy Chandler Music Center. She asked if I could create an interactive pointe shoe display where audience members could experience pointe shoes first hand before their classical ballet performances. I created a display that showed traditional and modern pointe shoes, as well as videos of dancers sewing and preparing their pointe shoes and videos about how pointe shoes are made. Included with the physical pointe shoes was also a timeline of the development of the pointe shoe from the 1900's to today. The display also featured toe pads, toe tape, and ballet slippers.

Patrons asked questions of the Dance Store staff that manned the tables, shared stories, and were encouraged to physically handle the shoes. Many patrons reported to the Audience Engagement department that they had a better appreciation for the ballet performance due to the interactive pointe shoe display in the lobby prior to the performance.
